    Evaluation of interactions within a shelterbelt agroecosystem

    A tree shelterbeit comprised of four rows of hybrid poplars was established near Ogden, Iowa in 1992 to evaluate shelterbeit characteristics and impacts on soil water content and crop growth andyieid. Major emphasis was on testing crops of corn and soybeans. The first three years saw little effects from the shelterbeit, and data from these years will be used to develop a baseline for future measurements. In the fourth and fifth years, corn yield patterns suggested that the shelterbeit increases yields in the zone leeward from the shelterbeit. Soybeans have not shown a response to the presence of the shelterbeit

    Tumor Necrosis Factor–Alpha Gene Expression in Human Whole Blood

    Tumor necrosis factor‐alpha (TNF) is recognized as a principal mediator of a variety of pathophysiologic and immunologic events. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge, either in vitro or in vivo, results in significant TNF production. In this study we present data demonstrating LPS‐induced TNF mRNA expression and bioactivity using an in vitro tissue system of whole blood (WB). The kinetics of LPS‐induced TNF production by WB was significantly accelerated as compared to isolated cultured peripheral blood monocytes (PBM). At post‐LPS challenge, plasma from WB demonstrated a rapid rise in TNF bioactivity, peaking by 4 hr (1,021 units/ml/106 cells), plateauing between 4 and 8 hr, and then decreasing over the next 16 hr. In contrast, the highest measured TNF bioactivity from PBM did not occur until the 24‐hr time‐point (175 units/ml/106 cells). Whole blood buffy‐coat TNF mRNA was assessed by Northern blot analysis, and demonstrated significant TNF mRNA accumulation at 1 hr and a peak 2 hr post‐LPS challenge. By 8 hr TNF mRNA was undetectable. Concomitant administration of LPS with either prostaglandin E2 (10‐6M) or Dexamethasone (10‐6M) resulted in significant suppression of LPS‐induced TNF production. This data supports WB as a useful in vitro medium for the molecular and cellular analyis of TNF.     Da precedenti studi \ue8 stato valutato che i nanotubi di allosite modificati con sali triazolici (f-HNT), sono dei promettenti sistemi carrier per molecole biologiche1. In questo lavoro si riportano i risultati ottenuti studiando gli f-HNT come carrier per il cardanolo, molecola con interessanti attivit\ue0 biologiche. L\u2019interazione fra il cardanolo e gli f-HNT \ue8 stata valutata tramite HPLC, spettroscopia FTIR, analisi termogravimentrica, misure di angolo di contatto e microscopia a scansione elettronica. Infine sono stati studiati sia il rilascio del cardanolo dal sistema che gli effetti citotossici del complesso f-HNT/Cardanolo verso linee cellulari di epatocarcinoma. I dati sperimentali ottenuti mostrano che l\u2019allosite risulta un promettente sistema atto al drug carrier

    The hydroxycarboxylic acid family of receptors (ENSFM00500000271913, nomenclature as agreed by the NC-IUPHAR Subcommittee on Hydroxycarboxylic acid receptors [32, 10]) respond to organic acids, including the endogenous hydroxy carboxylic acids 3-hydroxy butyric acid and L-lactic acid, as well as the lipid lowering agents nicotinic acid (niacin), acipimox and acifran [47, 54, 57]. These receptors were provisionally described as nicotinic acid receptors, although nicotinic acid shows submicromolar potency at HCA2 receptors only and is unlikely to be the natural ligand [54, 57]

    Unusual MRI findings in an immunocompetent patient with EBV encephalitis: a case report

    BACKGROUND: It is well-known that Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) can affect the central nervous system (CNS). CASE PRESENTATION: Herein the authors report unusual timely Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) brain scan findings in an immunocompetent patient with EBV encephalitis. Diffusion weighted MRI sequence performed during the acute phase of the disease was normal, whereas the Fast Relaxation Fast Spin Echo T2 image showed diffuse signal intensity changes in white matter. The enhancement pattern suggested an inflammatory response restricted to the brain microcirculation. Acyclovir and corticosteroid therapy was administered. After three weeks, all signal intensities returned to normal and the patient showed clinical recovery. CONCLUSION: This report demonstrates that EBV in an immunocompetent adult can present with diffuse, reversible brain white matter involvement in the acute phase of mononucleosis. Moreover, our case suggests that a negative DWI sequence is associated with a favorable improvement in severe EBV CNS infection.
